NYFW SS20: Micheal Kors

Michael Kors - The Update The Brand Needed

One brand I did not expect to be talking about was Michael Kors. Since the rise in their handbags, the brand has been tarnished for me with a commercial image where everyone has one of these handbags. I mean even my mother has a Michael Kors bag. Michael Kors took the company public and within this came the rise in the handbags. In a way it has negatively impacted the brand because even though they had that massive growth, they are now struggling. The store in Bristol closed a couple of months ago which was not a good sign for a brand that grew so quickly. However, this season started to show a positive change.

Spring/Summer 2020

Gone are the vibrant, highly floral dresses and in comes a nautical glamour. I love the elements of Navy and some of the tailoring, this really does feel quite different for Michael Kors. That's not to say that there isn't still some patterning, my favourite look is a large frilled gingham dress. I had seen a similar style within Topshop not too long ago. I love the large shoulder frills and the modesty of the outfit. I like the femininity of the dress which is crossed with a business structure. Michael Kors is usually all about femininity but this season that has changed.

The exception to this is some of the leopard print dresses which I have definitely seen Michael Kors create before. A lot of my favourites this season are the more monochrome, tailored pieces. I mean Bella Hadid stormed that runway in that glitter pinstriped playsuit. The outfit looked amazing, modern and chic, even though there was glitter involved. I'd love to wear something like this to my modern fashion/beauty job (when I get it.) My legs do not go on for days like Bella but I would certainly give it a go. I also like the belt that has been paired with the playsuit. I like the discoloured chain that gives it a little bit of edge and also builds on the strength of the outfit.

Considering this is a Spring/Summer collection, I think Michael Kors might be predicting some showers for next season. There are a lot of longer jackets and trench coats in the runway and this check coat in the picture above is my dream. I love check patterns anyway but I think the shape of the coat and the pattern is just so chic and would fit in with my monochrome wardrobe.

I am an avid fan of the humble tea dress but Michael Kors has changed it up a little bit so the style is different. I normally buy my tea dresses from fast fashion brands and the Michael Kors version is a lot longer than the ones I usually wear. I love the polka dot style and I love the asymmetric hem line. There are quite a few polka dot dresses in this runway so I would start looking for some polka dot dresses if I were you. This change to some traditional styles mirrors the change within the direction of Michael Kors.

Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?

A/W19 is Back Michael Kors carried through some of my favourite trends from last season, there are Ruffles, Check patterns, Polka Dots and Stripes. And the belted look is back

Forget Warm Weather, Prepare for Rain. Unlike other shows this season that have gone for minimal clothes, much like Coach there are quite a lot of layers in the show. That check coat will be mine. I did buy a check coat last season but this one is a check trench coat rather than a wool one like last time.

Tailoring isn't just for the Office. There are a lot of tailoring shapes within this runway but a lot of it wouldn't be appropriate for the office, such the Bella Hadid outfit but it looks so chic. I definitely need to find a playsuit or blazer/short combo that looks like this.

Cut Up Your Sofa for Some Shoulder Pad Realness. Once again there seems to be a lot of shoulder pads within the jackets or ruffles which spread over the shoulder to make them wider. Usually the structure of Micheal Kors clothes are lighter and more breezy but this just shows the change within their runway.
