The Cartier Style and History exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris chronicles the evolution of taste, whims and indulgences over the past 160 years. Six hundred Cartier jewels, watches and decorative objects are on display from December 4, 2013 through February 16, 2014 at the Grand Palais. The exhibition is an intriguing and beautiful history from the mid-1800s onwards of what Cartier created for the world's adornment. What better way to capture the spirit of times past? The bright colors of jewels never fade and always best express the aspirations of an age.
Passed down through royal generations, the diamond tiara worn by the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding, on display in the Cartier exhibit, is an excellent example of the timelessness of jewelry and it's span of generations. The head piece, composed of petal designs and paved with 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette-cut diamonds, takes its name from its halo shape and was made in 1936. The future King George VI had commissioned Cartier to create it for his wife, Elizabeth, the Queen's mother, shortly before he succeeded his brother to take the throne. The Queen Mother then gave the tiara to Queen Elizabeth on the occasion of her 18th birthday. Over the decades, it has been worn by the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, and the Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, before she lent it to Kate to wear when she became a member of the royal family in 2011 as 'something borrowed'.
The exhibit contains amazing jewels from the past that remain just as awe-inspiring today as they did when first created. Some of the other items on display include:
A flamingo pendant made of platinum, gold, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and one citrine owned by the Duchess of Windsor.
The engagement ring Cartier created for Prince Ranier to present to actress Grace Kelly.And 'La Peregrino', a necklace that Cartier created for Richard Burton to give to Elizabeth Taylor featuring a pearl that dates back to the 16th century, once belonging to Mary Tudor.
